5/21/2023 0 Comments The wandering by intan paramadithaThe Wandering reminded us of Polish writer Olga Tokarczuk’s Flights, which we previously read for our book club. It creates a very personal experience for the reader and requires our active engagement, to imagine ourselves in the stories. What makes this decision-making so personal and palpable is the author’s creative and clever use of the first-person perspective – ‘you’. The choices are limited and already decided for us, but I could still feel the tension and trepidation whenever I had to decide the next step, knowing that my decision will lead me on a very different path. What’s really fascinating about The Wandering is that it contains at least 15 major storylines and each storyline unfolds depending on the reader’s decision at various points in the novel, whether to take this path or that, whether to go here or there. 5/21/2023 0 Comments Lauren conrad books in orderFame brings more than she ever imagined possible for a girl from Santa Barbara-free designer clothes, the choicest tables at the most exclusive clubs, invites to Hollywood premieres-and she's lapping up the VIP treatment with her eclectic entourage of new pals. The cousin now stands to inherit the family fortune and get the girl, which drives the petulant ghost of Lim Tian Ching crazy. It seems the young man carried a torch for Li Lan while he was alive, though she was intended for his cousin (unbeknownst to her). The novel’s heroine, Li Lan, receives an offer of marriage from the wealthy family of Lim Tian Ching, a young man who died suddenly of a fever. Set in the 1890s in Malaysia (or, as it was known then, Malaya), this decadently imagined, elaborately romantic novel delves into the world of the supernatural in colonial Chinese culture, including the tradition of “spirit marriages.” Historically, spirit marriages were a way to appease the ghosts of young people who had died single, so they wouldn’t be lonely in the afterlife. In that sense, the first marriage proposal in Yangsze Choo’s debut novel, The Ghost Bride, is a little unusual: It comes from someone who’s been dead for months. Usually these dreams include, at minimum, another human being. Plenty of girls daydream about their future weddings. 5/21/2023 0 Comments The light at the end john skippA wild, unpredictable portrait of a bright, burning mind, it showcases Skipp's radical range, dark-hearted humor, and enormous empathy.
